In fiction we trust

Take Dan Brown for instance.  I’ve just started his new book, The Lost Symbol, which is shaping up to be another thought-provoking page-turner.  But in The Da Vinci Code, which more of us have read, we all lapped the contents of that book up didn’t we?

Why? Because it got the cogs of our muted brains moving again and made us question what we held true.  ‘Oh my God, yeah’ we all thought, ‘why have I never thought of this before?’

Sometimes we believe and trust fiction because if our hand is held tight enough, we want to think it’s real.  That’s why timeless stories are so stirring and fulfilling.  Against our better judgement we dare to believe them.
